First Time Trying Acupuncture? Here's Exactly What to Expect
Your honest, complete guide to the first visit — from someone who's heard every question
If you've been curious about acupuncture for a while but haven't made the appointment yet, you're in good company. Most people who come through our doors at Aurum Sage in Vancouver, WA spent some time sitting with the idea before they booked.
And the number one thing that held them back? Not knowing what to expect.
This post is the honest, complete answer to every question we hear from first-timers. No vague reassurances — just real information so you know exactly what you're walking into.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
This is always the first question. And the answer is: not the way you're imagining.
Acupuncture needles are nothing like the needles used for injections or blood draws. They're hair-thin — about the width of a strand of human hair — and solid, not hollow. The insertion is typically barely perceptible.
Once a needle is placed, you may feel a mild dull ache, a slight warmth, a tingling sensation, or nothing at all. In Classical Chinese Medicine, that deeper sensation — called the 'arrival of qi' — is actually a sign the acupuncture is working.
What most first-timers don't expect: how relaxing it is. Deep, full-body relaxation is one of the most consistent responses people have, even on a first visit. Many fall asleep on the table.
What Happens During the First Visit
Your first appointment at Aurum Sage is 60 minutes. Here's how it unfolds:
We begin with a conversation. Not a rushed intake form — an actual conversation about what's been happening, how long it's been going on, what you've tried, and what you're hoping for. This context shapes every treatment decision.
Then you'll lie comfortably on a treatment table — typically face up or face down, depending on what we're working with. Needles are placed at specific points on the body, and you rest quietly for 20–30 minutes while the treatment works.
Treatment may also include cupping, gua sha, or other adjunct therapies depending on your needs. Everything is explained before it's done.
What Does Acupuncture Actually Feel Like Afterward?
Most people leave their first session feeling one or more of the following:
A deep, pleasant heaviness — like your body finally let go of something it was holding
Unusual calm and mental clarity
Mild fatigue (a sign your nervous system is recalibrating — rest if you can)
Reduced pain or tension in the area being treated
Occasionally, symptoms can temporarily intensify in the 24 hours following a first treatment as the body begins to shift. This is normal and typically short-lived.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
This depends entirely on what you're coming in for and how long it's been present.
Acute conditions — a recent injury, a flare-up, a new onset of symptoms — often respond in two to four sessions.
Chronic patterns that have been present for months or years typically require a longer commitment. A course of six to twelve sessions over several weeks is common for conditions like chronic pain, anxiety, or hormonal irregularity.
We'll give you a clear recommendation after your first visit based on what we find.
Does Insurance Cover Acupuncture?
